1980 in Poland - Cold War

The election is on November 4th, but the new president doesn’t take control before January 20th – the 3 months between is a transition. During Carter-Reagan transition something happened, which was classified – they were giving books, money etc. to polish opposition. After JPII election in 1978 all of these things accelerate. The western media didn’t get the earthquake. Brzeziński predicted it, but he had a terrible press in the US. At 1980 democratic convention Brzeziński appeared and people started to boo. The same day Wałęsa climbed the fence and started to lead the strike. Americans didn’t know what was going on. Brzeziński made Carter send a telegram to Moscow what would they do if the Russians invade Poland and telling not to do this. Carter and Brzeziński also told the Poles not to go too far. Kania went to Brezhnev, who asked him who is Wałęsa, when he heard he just told Kania to arrest him, but Kania said he couldn’t do that because Wałęsa was a national hero. And then Brezhnev started talking about some guy who was…dead from 7 years! It was like Brezhnev was out of his mind. Honecker wanted the invasion. Brzeziński’s strategy was to let the Solidarity exist and become an alternative, shadow cabinet. On first week of december 1980 all the communist leaders met in Moscow. Brzeziński got the report form the secret source – colonel Kukliński, who said that Russians wanted to move in. Carter sent a paragraph directly to Brezhnev’s office not to do that. Brzeziński started using journalist, making interviews in the background (not giving his name) saying that if Russians go in all the credits gonna dry up, all the trade is gonna stop, maybe it can disrupt West German-Soviet Union gas deal, and the US may sell some weapons to China.
