Middle East and Camp David

Middle East and Camp David

Middle East – after 1967 and 1973 most American politicians didn’t dare say anything critical about Israel (mostly because of Jews electors in US) . Israel is surrounded by hostile neighbors, who do want to push it to the sea. PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization) in the 1970s was made up of murderers and terrorists, and it wasn’t possible to get peace with these people. No American president even wanted to be seen in the same room as Yasser Arafat. No one dare, if wanted to win the elections. Brzeziński proposed to organize a comprehensive, Middle Eastern settlement, including maybe even the Russians and PLO. For Israel it was unacceptable, because USA wanted to go back to the frontiers from 1967. However Carter cancelled this summit. But unexpectedly Egypt, governed by Anwar Sadat declared the will of making peace with Israel, because Egypt and the whole region needs it. On November 1977, Sadat went to Israel and gave speech in Knesset. Sadat and Israeli prime minister – Menachem Begin have negotiated in Camp David for two weeks. In 1978 they signed a Camp David Accord, which reached the peace between Egypt and Israel. Begin and Sadat received Nobel Price. In 1981 Sadat was murdered by Islamic fundamentalist. But in the Middle East there was an underground opposition against people like Sadat. Those people started to formed Islamic fundamentalism, which under any circumstances, didn’t want a peace with Zionists.
